Republican candidate for Governor Byron Donalds deviated from his stump speech Friday with an appearance on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” where current events were up for discussion.
The politician and the provocateur discussed Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts woman on trial for killing her three young children three years ago, an incident the defense blames on postpartum psychosis. They also delved into the case of Jed York. The CEO of the San Francisco 49ers was arrested this month in Ohio, accused of soliciting prostitution.
In the former case, Donalds said “three kids are gone” and that the tragedy illustrates healthcare gaps, particularly around mental health.
“I think this story, obviously, is a tragedy in and of itself, but it does demonstrate that there are some real holes in healthcare, and from my perspective, we have to really think about how we’re going to deliver it, especially in some of the real acute mental health issues that do exist in the United States.”
It’s uncertain how Donalds would fund treatment of these issues, but he’s definitely aware of them.
Regarding York, who was allegedly trawling for sex in a trailer park early in the morning, Donalds took a more humorous tack in suggesting other options were available.
“With a billion dollars, you ain’t wandering. Just go to a bar,” the Congressman advised.
