HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Senate seeker Abdul El-Sayed, the Michigan Democrat, will likely face intense scrutiny in the chamber if he wins the race for the state’s open seat.
The progressive firebrand’s aggressive rhetoric has inflamed already hostile Republicans and concerned Democrats about his place in the party, which is trying to improve its brand. The GOP has sought to scare the public about his Islamic identity—El-Sayed would be the first Muslim senator—while Democrats are pushing him to quiet his campaign’s controversies.
The candidate has also served as a lightning rod for criticism of the Democratic Party’s left wing, which President Donald Trump routinely represents as the party’s main pillar. With more visibility in the Senate, El-Sayed would likely attract even more attention, especially as the 2028 elections near.
Some of his potential colleagues have faced similar fates. Senator John Fetterman, the Pennsylvania Democrat whose bold behavior captured the country’s 2022 midterm conversations, has become bitter as years of bipartisan scrutiny take their toll. He’s turned against members of his own party, attacking them in interviews with conservative media outlets.
On Thursday, the senator called El-Sayed “garbage” and associated the capitalist candidate with the rise of socialism.
“I don’t care he’s a fellow Democrat. … These are the kind of people that our party is picking,” Fetterman told 77 WABC, the conservative radio station.
Whether El-Sayed will follow in Fetterman’s footsteps remains to be seen, but his path to a controversial career in the Senate is clear in the country’s divided state. Only Mike Rogers, the former Republican congressman running against El-Sayed, can stand in his way.
The two are in a right race, though a recent poll placed the Democrat in a seven-point lead. Rogers has portrayed himself as a midwestern moderate to highlight El-Sayed’s liberal views, even though he’s resorted to extreme tactics to stain the Democrat’s campaign.
“I spent years hunting terrorists and bringing Osama bin Laden to justice,” Rogers, a former FBI agent, said earlier this month. “Never in a million years did I think that I would be running against someone who believes America deserved 9/11.”
El-Sayed’s never said that; his political associate, far-left streamer Hasan Piker, did in 2019 but walked back his comments shortly after. Rogers’s campaign has defended his statement, though, foreshadowing the unabashed politics El-Sayed could find himself tangled in if he makes it to the Senate.
The Democrat still has time to tone down his rhetoric, but the approaching November election will only intensify the pressure he has to find a comfortable fit in Washington.
