Democrats back Italy’s AI gigafactory as national interest crosses party lines – Decode39
ROME — Italy’s Democratic Party is backing the government’s push for a national AI gigafactory, putting strategic infrastructure ahead of the usual majority-opposition divide.
The support, voiced by the PD’s Senate group leader Francesco Boccia, gives Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government an important opening from parliamentary minority as Rome prepares its bid for one of Europe’s planned large-scale AI computing hubs.
Why it matters: The move shows how parts of the Italian opposition — particularly the PD’s reformist wing — are willing to converge with the government when technology, industrial capacity and national strategic interests are at stake.
The big picture: The European Commission plans to support a first wave of AI gigafactories — large computing infrastructures designed to develop and train advanced artificial intelligence models. Italy wants to be part of that race.
Boccia’s support matters because it gives the initiative a political dimension beyond the companies involved.
Between the lines: The position also fits a more traditional foreign and strategic policy instinct within parts of the PD: competition between government and opposition does not necessarily extend to projects seen as strengthening Italy’s technological sovereignty and international position.
Zoom out: For Rome, the project is also about Europe’s ability to reduce its dependence on non-European technology.
The bottom line: That dynamics make the Italian bid more than a technology investment. For both the government and at least part of the opposition, it is becoming a test of whether Italy can turn industrial scale into strategic capacity — and do so with enough political continuity to compete at the European level.
