GRAND ISLAND – Hall County Commissioners Gary Quandt and Karen Bredthauer and Hall County Attorney Marty Klein were seated in bleachers behind the stage when President Donald Trump spoke Oct. 5 at the Pinnacle Bank Expo Center in Grand Island.
Quandt, Bredthauer, and Klein are Republicans. They had a close, clear view of the stage from the bleachers but were looking at the backs of the speakers, who were facing east. Occasionally, the speakers, including Trump, would turn and face the bleachers.
Bredthauer and Quandt commented about President Trump’s visit to Grand Island on Oct. 5
“It was one of the highlights of my life. I was thoroughly impressed, first of all, with the way it was put on. And what Trump said. He was so down to earth and didn’t talk over people’s heads. I have so much more respect for him than what I had before. He was so easygoing. It was almost like he was talking to us and not giving a speech,” Bredthauer said Oct. 5.
Quandt first commented Oct. 5 before speakers had started addressing the audience about the 30-foot by 60-foot U.S. flag attached to a 100-foot tall crane, located on the south side of Stolley Park Road, south of the south entrance to Fonner Park. The flag was sent up by midday Oct. 5 by Kaleb Lilienthal, operations manager with MRL Crane Service and Equipment Rental in Grand Island.
“Mike Lilienthal from MRL Construction and Rental has got that beautiful flag on a crane. Mike Lilienthal is a former Marine. It shows his patriotism for his country,” Quandt said.
Quandt then commented about President Trump coming to Grand Island.
“It’s America. President Trump is going to be in Grand Island, Nebraska. It’s an honor to have him here.”
Quandt talked about the festive, patriotic atmosphere inside the Pinnacle Bank Expo Center on Oct. 5.
“It shows the patriotism of this country. When a President comes to Grand Island, we want to make him feel welcome,” Quandt said.
