Tom Begich and his running mate, Julia Hnilicka, are suspending their campaign for Alaska governor and endorsing fellow Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins.
Begich entered the race just over a year ago, saying he believed Alaska needed a different direction.
The campaign focused on fully funding public education, affordable energy and housing, opportunities for young Alaskans, and ensuring the state receives its fair share from its resources.
Begich also said communication between the governor’s office and the Legislature has deteriorated.
“I’ve watched as, over the last eight years, communication between the governor, the House and the Senate has really deteriorated.”
In a video released on social media, Begich said his campaign for Alaska governor is being suspended because continuing through the November election would require millions more dollars than the campaign has available.
He said discussions with fellow Democratic candidate Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, along with internal and campaign data, showed the strongest path to winning in November was to unite behind one Democratic ticket rather than compete for the same donors and resources.
Kreiss-Tomkins says his campaign is focused on problem-solving and bipartisanship. He says public education is one of Alaska’s biggest challenges.
“New energy, new ideas and a new approach to solving the state’s problems, and I am unabashedly like a problem solver. I don’t care who I am working with to solve problems.”
