The 2025 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People, published by The Trevor Project on May 6, 2026, highlights persistent mental health struggles, systemic barriers, and the negative impacts of political rhetoric on LGBTQ+ youth (ages 13–24). [1, 2]
Key Survey Findings
- Suicidality & Mental Health: Over a third (36%) of LGBTQ+ youth considered suicide in the past year, with rates higher among transgender and nonbinary individuals (40%), while 10% attempted suicide. Additionally, 62% reported anxiety and 47% reported depression. [1]
- Barriers & External Stressors: 44% could not access desired mental health care, primarily due to cost. Political rhetoric and anti-LGBTQ+ policies caused anxiety for 90% of respondents, and 59% of youth ages 13–17 faced bullying. [1]
- Protective Factors: Acceptance remains vital; youth in supportive environments or with high family backing experienced markedly lower rates of suicidal ideation. [1, 2]
