WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Republican National Committee is offering members of the public a chance to attend its first midterm convention through a free ticket lottery. The two-day event is scheduled for Sept. 9 and 10 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
Vice President JD Vance is set to headline the convention’s opening night, while President Donald Trump is expected to deliver the closing-night keynote. The RNC has described the gathering as a ceremonial convention meant to showcase the party’s agenda ahead of the November midterm elections.
Zach Kraft, spokesperson for the RNC’s Dallas Midterm Convention, said opening the event to the public reflects Trump’s focus on reaching voters outside the party’s traditional convention structure. “Never before has this sort of event been open to the American people,” Kraft said.
Kraft said the convention will give Trump an opportunity to speak directly to supporters and highlight his administration’s policies. He said the RNC hopes the event will help Republicans counter the historical pattern in which the president’s party often loses congressional seats in midterm elections.
Control of Congress is expected to come down to a relatively small number of competitive races. Kraft said the RNC is watching roughly 30 House contests and six or seven Senate races that could determine which party controls each chamber.
He pointed to the Texas Senate race between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico as one of the races drawing national attention. Kraft argued that Republican candidates are running on a “common-sense agenda,” while criticizing Democratic candidates’ policy positions.
People interested in attending can apply for tickets at GOPConvention.com, Kraft said. Applicants are expected to learn by Sept. 4 whether they were selected, with some attendees receiving VIP access. “The fact that this is being open to everyone is unprecedented,” Kraft said.
