Above file video: Rick Jackson addresses supporters after GOP runoff win
Tensions appear to remain as Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones has yet to endorse the Republican Party’s nominee, billionaire businessman Rick Jackson, following their contentious primary.
Jones, who lost the nomination to Jackson, denied an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report that former President Donald Trump had offered him an ambassadorship in exchange for endorsing Jackson. He said Trump had merely encouraged the two Republicans to reconcile.
Jones characterized his recent meeting with Jackson as “small talk” and said he would reconsider an endorsement if Jackson dropped a defamation lawsuit filed during the primary.
Jackson faces Democratic nominee and former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in November's general election.
Asked whether he would vote for Jackson, Jones said, “Obviously, I’m interested in supporting and keeping Georgia Republican-run and keeping it red. And I think November is going to be a challenge.”
Jackson’s campaign, meanwhile, maintained that Republicans are united.
