Older swing voters in Maine favor Republican Collins and Democrat Pingree in upcoming election – mainepublic.org
Swing voters ages 50 and older will likely play a big role in Maine’s upcoming election, according to a new poll from AARP.
Those voters heavily favor Democrat Hannah Pingree, or Independent Rick Bennett, over Republican Bobby Charles in the gubernatorial race.
And swing voters are helping to keep Republican Senator Susan Collins competitive in the U.S. Senate race, where Democratic candidate Troy Jackson has a narrow three-point lead, says Bob Ward.
Ward is with the Republican opinion research firm Fabrizio Ward, which conducted the poll with Democratic firm Impact Research.
“The swing voters are gravitating overwhelmingly to Sen. Collins, and they’re not gravitating to Bobby Charles,” Ward said.
The poll also finds that rising prices and affordability are among the top issues that are driving Mainer’s decisions on who to vote for this election.
That’s especially true for swing voters ages 50 and older, Ward explained.
“Here’s what voters want from candidates,” he said. “A candidate who fights to make sure workers get the Social Security they paid for; protects it from cuts. A candidate who brings down health care costs. A candidate who shows up for caregivers.”
The poll was conducted Sept. 20 – 22 and has a margin of error of just over 3%.
